IOS 26: Apple Skips iOS 19 and Revolutionizes the Operating System
A New Chapter for the iPhone User Experience
Apple has announced a significant change in the numbering of its mobile operating system: instead of continuing with iOS 19, the next update will be called iOS 26. This decision aims to unify the version numbering across Apple’s ecosystem operating systems—such as iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS—aligning them with the expected release year, 2026. The official announcement is expected during the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), taking place from June 9 to 13, 2025.
Why Jump Directly to iOS 26?
Apple’s choice to adopt year-based numbering, similar to that used in the automotive industry, is intended to simplify users’ understanding of OS versions. Currently, there is a discrepancy among Apple’s OS versions—for example, iOS is at version 18, while watchOS is at 12 and visionOS at 2. With iOS 26, Apple aims to create consistency across platforms, making version identification easier and improving the user experience.
An Interface Inspired by visionOS
iOS 26 will introduce a major UI redesign inspired by visionOS, the operating system for the Vision Pro headset. New features will include:
- Modernized Icons: Cleaner, more contemporary designs
- Dynamic Elements: A more interactive and responsive interface
- Floating Navigation Bars: Smoother navigation experience
- Enhanced Haptic Interactions: More precise and engaging tactile feedback
These changes aim to provide a more immersive and consistent user experience across all Apple devices.
AI at the Core: Apple Intelligence
With iOS 26, Apple will continue integrating advanced artificial intelligence features through Apple Intelligence. Key innovations include:
- Enhanced Siri: A more natural and contextual virtual assistant powered by advanced language models
- Writing Tools: Features for rewriting, correcting, and summarizing text
- Image Generation: Creating personalized images from textual descriptions
- Priority Notifications: An intelligent system to highlight the most relevant alerts
These functionalities will be available on compatible devices such as the iPhone 15 Pro and newer models.
Extended Compatibility
iOS 26 will support a wide range of devices, including:
- iPhone XR, XS, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16
- iPhone SE (2nd, 3rd, and 4th generation)
This extended support demonstrates Apple’s commitment to providing updates even for older devices.
